Environmental Engineering

The Programme in Environmental Engineering (EE) aims at a general engineering practice related to the protection of environment and sustainable development. At the undergraduate level, principal engineering skills are gained and built upon the more general command of basic subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Alumni, owing the professional Engineer’s title, will be capable to handle various environmental issues at industrial companies, supervise equipment operation, carry measurements, participate in environmental impact assessment procedures at the local level. Graduates (Masters) will be able to develop their individual professional practice, to carry independently environmental impact assessments, to design and govern environment protection measures in companies, to maintain monitoring networks and to provide expertise to local and regional authorities for decision making. All the students are given general knowledge of processes in major constituents of environment components as well as in basic environmental technologies, e.g., atmospheric physics and chemistry, and air pollution control, hydrology, water resources and water protection, water and sewage processing, groundwater, soil protection and land reclamation, waste management. Further, environmental aspects of the energy production and use are stressed. Alumni are also familiar with some general environmental issues such as climatic change, ozone layer depletion, land use changes and global water scarcity and contamination. At the graduate level, some broader knowledge will be acquired, including environmental law and economy, impact analysis, mathematical modelling, environment quality assessment and management. These are linked to either the national and the EU perspectives. Background in basic subjects is extended through courses in selected fields of physics and mathematics. Graduates specialize in individual topics through the choice of elective courses in various areas of environment and environmental technologies. Graduates in Environmental Engineering are prepared to work for the industry, transportation companies, land reclamation and waste management companies, water & sewer companies, design studios and consulting companies, national, regional and local environmental agencies and services, environmental inspection and monitoring units.
